Naturalistic Hypnotherapy with Dr. Michael Glock
My practice is an eclectic mix of analysis, positive psychology, symbolic storytelling and a naturalistic form of “utilizing” hypnotherapy originally developed by Milton H. Erickson. Utilizing means that in a session everything that is available, every capacity and every response the patient has and is capable of giving at any particular moment is used. This requires a fidelity to observation, empathy with the patient and good instincts. Important characteristics I have and that I model—so that you can gain them.
Another way of understanding my methods is to know I practice heuristic’s. Simply understood as any approach to problem solving, learning, or discovery that employs a practical method not guaranteed to be optimal or perfect, but sufficient to achieve the immediate desired goals. I may use NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), metaphorical stories, or combine a simple method of time travelling with tapping to release old pent up traumas.
In addition the work is heavily influenced by Carl G. Jung and Sigmund Freud’s work, the two fathers of Depth Psychology. My Ph.D. is in Philosophy with an emphasis in Depth Psychology graduating after 7 years of study and writing from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Freud and Jung, in a re-discovered the unconscious, the fundamental recognition that unconscious forces, both personal and collective are at work behind the scenes of every human act, every war, every book, story and film. Every popular and mass movement is a direct result of cultural unconscious forces at work. Jung and Freud developed therapeutic models and methods that rely on going down and into presenting issues and understanding them. It is a method of exploring shadow material and uncovering the complexes of interpretation that earlier incidents triggered.
My work is a mash up of different methods, creating a large chest of available tools from which to use to solve the issue you have. This is a type of heuristic process, where, as a therapist I take direct responsibility of influencing you, the patient according to a plan of treatment determined by the presenting problem. It is a form of rapid psychotherapy that I combine with Applied Hypnosis and Spiritual Psychology. This model of talk therapy is enhanced with story telling and a high tech audio and visual virtual reality office.
A typical session contains three sections. A beginning, middle and end. This may also be understood symbolically, as birth, death and rebirth. In the beginning or birth phase we go through a discovery process where we weave back and forth over time to find the core or presenting incident, trauma or memory. Often this is unconscious, as Carl G. Jung stated, “that which is not made conscious is doomed to live out in the world as fate.”
In the middle of the session, the presenting issues impact on the present who you are today, how you react to situations, what you look like, how connected you are to your creativity and instincts or not is revealed. Often this may be experienced as a petite death. It is a moment of climax where as Sigmund Freud explains “From error to error one discovers the entire truth.”
The next phase is rebirth, the presenting issue is reframed, it is understood as a positive helping phenomena and forgiven. What was unconscious is lifted to the surface and examined. Alternative meanings and anchors are created to replace existing perceptions, memories and conclusions. Remember you are in a safe and sacred environment, often you will hear the sound of water flowing, forest birds chirping in the forest canopy, or rolling ocean surf, or Gregorian chanting in the background. Trancework is employed to help reframe and anchor in alternative anchors and stories that ultimately to produce rapid, naturalistic, significant and lifelong change.
At the end of the session we are left with understanding Freud’s ultimate analysis of life “Love and work… work and love, is all there is.”
My work is about doing “the work,” helping you “do the work” and helping you recognize that the only other thing you need is love.
The focus in the sessions are not so much on understanding or having insight, but on promoting effective, creative living, independent of the underlying therapeutic need. We are here to accomplish goals and maximize patient-based change.
